Citadel Laferrier
This is the largest fortification structure in the Western Hemisphere, which was built between 1804 and 1817 at the top of a mountain one kilometer high on the northern coast of the island of Haiti by the order of the only king of Haiti, Henri Christophe, who ruled under the name Henri I. The fortress was erected to stand up French, as well as for a good overview of the surrounding area. About 20,000 slaves built it. The fortress was equipped with 365 cannons, the nuclei of which can still be seen in various places of the citadel. Today, Lafererry Citadel is one of the main attractions of Haiti and, in combination, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress is depicted on banknotes and stamps of Haiti. In clear weather, not only the fourth largest city of Cap-Haïtien, but even the coast of Cuba can be seen from the wall of the citadel!
Sanssouci Palace
The dilapidated palace of the King of Haiti, Henri I (Henri Christophe), which is located in Milo (13 kilometers from the city of Cap-Haïtien). The Dovre was built between 1810 and 1813 near the famous fortress Laferere. It is noteworthy that in the palace of Sanssouci, King Henri I committed suicide with the help of a silver bullet, and his son (the heir of the king) was killed during the uprising. The palace was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1842, after which it is considered damned among the local population. In 1982, Sanssouci was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Toussaint-Louverture International Airport
International airport in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, which is the main air gateway of the country. It was opened in 1965 and was named Haitian President François Duvalier, but was first renamed to the International Airport of Port-au-Prince in 1986, and in 2003 received its current name. Francois Dominique Toussaint-Louverture is the leader of the Haitian revolution, as a result of which Haiti became the first independent state of Latin America.
Somatr Pond and Lake Ethan-Sumatr
The pond is located near the town of Croix-de-Bouquet and is, in fact, a salt lake. The width of the pond is about 30 kilometers from one shore to the other. On the banks you can meet giant landed Hispaniola turtles. Not far from the border with the neighboring Dominican Republic is Lake Ethan-Sumatr, which attracts tourists from all over the world with its untouched nature, a multitude of birds and exotic plants.
National Museum of Haiti
It was founded in 1938. In the museum you can find unique documents, a collection of old coins, weapons, various paintings and household utensils. Also here the fine arts of not only Haiti, but also other countries of America and Europe are demonstrated. The history of the museum affects the period from the Indian peoples of Arawaks to the 40s of the 20th century. One of the main exhibits of the museum are a pistol from which Henri Christophe (Henri I) was shot and the anchor of the ship of Christopher Columbus Santa Maria, who ran aground the coast of Haiti in late December 1492.
Artistic village of Croix de Bouquet
The village is located near Port-au-Prince in the town of Croix-de-Bouquet. There are several workshops and exhibition grounds with various metal decorations, which Georges Lyoto began to make in the early 50s of the 20th century for use in local cemeteries.
National Natural Park La Vizit
Located 40 kilometers south of the city of Port-au-Prince and is located on the territory of the De la Sel mountain range. There are many hiking trails along which you can reach beautiful tropical forests, limestone caves and unique plants and birds that can only be seen here.
Cathedral of Cap Haitien
The cathedral is located in the central square of Cap Haitien. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1878 and lasted for several decades. A monument to the leader of the Haitian revolution, François Dominique Toussaint-Louverture, was erected in front of the Cathedral.
Lake Tru-Cayman
A small salt lake, whose name translates as “Cayman’s hole”. Located in the Kuld de Sak Valley in the Western Department of Haiti, 7 kilometers from the other lake of Somatr. The area of the lake is 16 square kilometers (about 9 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide). Is the best place for bird watching on the whole island of Haiti.
Peak Macaya National Park
The park was founded in 1983 and is located in the southern part of the country. It is one of the two national parks of the country. The only place of the Republic of Haiti, where there were untouched cloud forests. The maximum height is 2347 meters above sea level. The Makaya peak is the second highest point of Haiti after the Peak of La Sel.
