The Republic of Haiti is located in the western part of the island of the same name, bordering the Dominican Republic. Out of 10 million people in the country, more than a million Haitians live abroad, mostly in the United States.
The Haitians are proud that in 1804 they became the second after the US independent state in America and the first republic in the world headed by a black president. In the former French colony the state language is French.
According to the tradition, in the former French colonies, unlike the English colonies, there is more dirt and debris. The French have accustomed the local natives to pay less attention to the unsettledness of life.
Haiti – the poorest country in America, constantly suffering from hunger, natural disasters and coups. In 2004, more than 1.5 thousand people died from landslides caused by torrential rains and at least 2 thousand were victims of tropical storms “Jeanne” and “Ivan”. International humanitarian assistance has provoked an unfair distribution with bloodshed. A catastrophic earthquake in 2010 led to the deaths of more than 200 thousand people. Not only were many government and other public buildings destroyed, but a cholera epidemic broke out.
